While the typical online marketing consultant may think it better to focus more heavily on Facebook or Twitter, companies should also consider tapping into Instagram's audience. According to compete.com, its site had more than 11.5 million unique visitors in August, and All Things Digital reported that more mobile device users access Instagram than Twitter from smartphones.
"Despite its rapid growth, many professionals, brands and companies still do not have an idea on how to make this platform into an online marketing tool," Josue said.
One way in which companies can use Instagram is by leveraging comments left on shared photos. According to Josue, businesses should strive to encourage people to comment on its pictures, as that will provide a new forum by which an organization can directly communicate and foster goodwill among the public.
In addition, companies can incorporate Instagram by using the site as a hub for social media. The photo sharing website allows for pictures to be easily incorporated into other sites like Facebook and Twitter, which means that businesses can target multiple platforms while putting in effort toward just one site, she wrote.
Use contests to reach a wider audience
A proven marketing consulting piece of advice offered by Josue was to utilize the site for a photo contest. Competitions can be a highly effective way for a brand or business to leverage its audience to reach a greater number of people, and a photo contest can be an easy way to implement this online marketing strategy.
"More than just a photo editing app, Instagram should be viewed as a blogging tool focused on images where the photo is the blog entry and the comments can be turned into conversions by creating lively discussions with other users," Josue wrote. "It can be a new foray for many [i]nternet marketing firms but it doesn’t mean that it has to be a taxing endeavor."
